Problem Prevention

"NEW Behaviour Problem Prevention Courses"

Behavioural Referrals Veterinary Practice is offering a new service to dog owners in Chester and the surrounding area. The "Behaviour problem prevention course" aims to educate dog owners about the prevention of common behavioural problems and provide advice on how puppies can develop into sociable and confident adults. The course is run by a team of qualified rehabilitation trainers and a veterinary nurse and will take place at the Leahurst site of the University of Liverpool, Neston, Wirral.

The puppy course consists of five one hour evening events over consecutive weeks. The puppy course is aimed at owners of puppies that have completed their second vaccination and are less than 5 months of age. It will differ significantly in its content from both puppy parties and training classes so owners will benefit from attending the "Behaviour problem prevention course" in addition to their usual puppy parties and appropriate local puppy training classes.

The content of the "Behaviour problem prevention course" will include information about a wide range of behavioural prevention topics, including:

  • A basic understanding of socialisation, social referencing and habituation
  • A guide to reading and interpreting canine communication and body language
  • An understanding of the way in which emotion affects behaviour
  • Prevention of common behaviour problems including resource guarding and attention seeking
  • Introduction to muzzle and buster collar training, body harness or head collar fitting and acceptance of clinical examination.
